After the failure of his affair with a woman much younger than him, Shutov, Russian writer and former political dissident in exile in Paris, decided to return to his home country in hopes of finding himself. Then travels to St. Petersburg to meet with Iana, his great love of youth. But their illusions inevitably collide with reality: Iana has become a frivolous new rich. The post-communist Russia makes him feel as a foreigner in his own land. While hosted at an old community house converted into a luxury apartment, Shutov meets Volsky. Suddenly, the return of Shutov makes sense: Volsky describes him the gripping story of his life that stands as testimony to the monstrous Soviet era: the siege of Leningrad, hunger and cold, the gulags, the terror of state. A life in which love and art stand against the horror of history to restore human dignity.
